Let’s focus on Mad Bad World for a second; even before we dive into their origin story, we’d like to enjoy ‘Mirror Mime’ without any preconceived beliefs. The project’s appeal is undeniable: packing an eclectic and euphoric formula, the single feels striking and hazy, constantly oscillating between organised chaos and nostalgic melodies. References are pretty diverse, with a blend of indie, psych-punk and pop tones being thrown into the mix.
Not bad for such a relatively new project. Guided by American musician Matt Battle, Mad Bad World is quite a personal outfit, one that sees Battle taking care of pretty much all instruments and the entire production process. ‘Mirror Mime’ is taken from the project’s 2024 debut album ‘Mercy Memory’, a very contemporary slice of unfiltered euphoria that deserves to be recognised more. Packing a great deal of cinematic allure, Matt’s artistic language fully connects with us.
Delving deeper into the record, Battle explains: “I also feel it’s my most lyrically vulnerable album I’ve made thus far. I’ve been producing and recording my music for years, yet it was the first time in over a decade that I had made a solo album and played nearly everything myself.”
