The New Solarism Shares Classical Album ‘The Kiss’

It took us a while to find suitable words to describe ‘The Kiss’. A neo-classical wonder, the album benefits from a wealth of cinematic and liminal material, all interpreted by the sharp and precise violin of composer and musician Izabela Kaldunska. Under her moniker The New Solarism, the German-based creative rescued a forgotten body of work by Tomas Blum, here described as “music for an unperformed theatre piece.”

Originally written by Blum, ‘The Kiss’ was conceived during the pandemic lockdowns as a remote-controlled opera, with each part being performed in their individual homes by a line-up of musicians. The project never quite reached its planned conclusion, yet it now finds a new lease of life thanks to The New Solarism. Steeped in long and spacious string-powered soundscapes and a wealth of liminal textures, ‘The Kiss’ offers an introspective, cathartic listening experience, one that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the album, Izabela explains: “I think the release is very special because it reveals many aspects of the sound that a single violin can make. The main theme from ‘In The End’ gained so much meaning for me over the last few years – it became a wish for the world to stop conflicts, and also a question, ‘how can we ever feel peace again after all that happened?’”.
