It’s been a while since we wrote about Occurrence, yet it feels as though they were never really gone. Crowning a fantastic and productive year thanks to an album already released in February, ‘Real Friend’, the New York-based trio now returns with a ‘surprise’ LP, an instrumental spin-off that’s incredibly nuanced and boundary-pushing. ‘REAL PERSON’ is exactly that: adventuring into leftfield territories and experimental shores, the record contains a wealth of eye-catching, otherworldly electronica, a bold collection that’s a joy to listen to.
Every track takes the name of an actual person, as bandleader and instrumentalist Ken Urban explains: “As we were recording our last album ‘Real Friend’, we started working on these more experimental instrumentals that were us embodying the feelings and associations we had for these writers, artists and friends who inspired us in our lives.” Cat Hollyer and Johnny Hager, both on vocals, take a step back here, yet certainly contribute to the creative ethos behind the record.
In a way, ‘REAL PERSON’ can be seen as a charming easter egg granted to us by Occurrence. It’s an alternative view on the project’s artistry, one that confirms once again the trio’s limitless creativity. Delving deeper into the album, Hager continues: “This album was a chance for the three of us to connect more with Occurrence’s experimental past, a chance for us to really explore sounds and textures outside the confines of a traditional song.”
