Diving into ‘Through The Roof’ is a rather ethereal, otherworldly experience. You see, there’s a great deal of spacious textures and dreamy sound design in it, a weird yet enticing formula that’s both nostalgic and futuristic. It’s hard to explain, as the EP feels timeless, as if it were written in another dimension. Perhaps we weren’t meant to find the record, or not yet. In any case, we rejoice in knowing that there are still bold creatives on our planet, brave art makers willing to step into unknown territories.
Midtown Vice belongs to such a category, blessing our ears with boundary-pushing hazy goodness, an eclectic concoction of lo-fi tones, expansive guitars and limitless reverb. There’s a touch of darkwave and dream pop in it, as well as a certain shoegaze quality that’s ever hypnotising and lush. Packing six challenging pieces, ‘Through The Roof’ is a perfect record for a publication called Mesmerized. In fact, we love it; we can truly lose ourselves in it, using it as a cathartic tool for introspection and reflection. That’s what we spend our days doing, if it wasn’t clear.
Midtown Vice accompany us in our meaningful journey through human consciousness, stepping from braniac, experimental episodes (such as Angel/Creatine) to more mundane, digestible and expansive gems (‘Could’ve Sworn I Saw You). ‘Inside of a Hole’ takes the record to a close in leftfield fashion, reminding us of Midtown Vice’s unique artistry. That said, the whole EP has been an intense fever dream experience; was any of it real?
