Anne Bennett Unveils Haunting Slow-Burner ‘Borrowed Skin’

A mysterious, liminal songstress, Anne Bennett has always enjoyed operating on the fringe. Self-describing herself as ‘lover of the macabre’, the talented American creative champions an alternative, goth-inspired aesthetic, threading the fine line between existential doom and euphoric melancholia. Such a dazzling and fierce visual livery often translates into a more eclectic sonic character, with Bennett comfortable in both slow-paced, poignant ballads and more uplifting, twitchy bangers.

‘Borrowed Skin’ is more on the banger side; in fact, it fully delves into industrial and new wave references, a sort of Depeche Mode-meet-Lacuna Coil flair that’s packed with spacious, haunting vocals and gloomy textures. The listening experience is rather mysterious and introspective, with Bennett looking inwards and highlighting themes of “identity disconnection and emotional shapeshifting”, as she so boldly explains.

What’s more, the record has been produced by Matt McJunkins of A Perfect Circle, a fitting match for Anne’s striking, powerful tone.
