What happens when you pair together Austin Gatus and Sophia James? The most stunning, elegant and buoyant ballad. Gatus is a saxophonist and musician with a heightened sense of wonder. James is an American Idol alumnus boasting dynamic, luscious vocals steeped in soulful tinges and jazz flavourings. ‘Don’t Want This to Change’ is the piece born out of such a potent collaboration, a slice of rich haziness and eclectic R&B character.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Gatus explains: “This song is about looking back at the past and hoping that the other person is doing okay. I’m doing okay, too. That delayed hit in the chorus when I sing ‘okay’ makes this song memorable for me. I continue on this theme of growing after things don’t go right. Learning to adapt. To take care of yourself. Looking back on it and being like, ‘oh, now that I’m in a better space, I can look back and check up on that situation’.”
