We are certainly familiar with Kmalectro, having interviewed the German producer late last year. Active in electronic music with a strong and eclectic perspective, the talented sonic wizard has recently returned with an unexpected offering, ‘HOLA’, a slice of heartfelt, poignant lyricism and liminal electronica. Built on haunting, gloomy atmospheres, the record benefits from an undisclosed singer, lending the single his dynamic, charming tone and driving meaningful storytelling with a touch of personal experience.
The decisive focus on the lyrics is one of the record’s strong points, something that Kmalectro is very adamant about: “I don’t want to be a projection surface, but to create a space. What matters is the song and what it evokes in people, not who’s on the cover.” That’s perhaps why this particular piece doesn’t feel that close to Kmalectro’s usual style. All his euphoric, club-oriented goodness has been temporarily reeled in, in favour of a more digestible and relatable endeavour.
It works: ‘HOLA’ deeply connect with listeners thanks to its empowering, personal message and nuanced, detailed groove, described by Kmalectro as having ‘Latin pop’ influences – although those are rather hidden and perhaps get lost in the overall sonic picture. Speaking about the song, the German producer explains: “Someone in my life – someone I deeply care about – was struggling with accepting different parts of themselves. This inner conflict moved me deeply. The song is a kind of response, but also a mirror.”
