‘Be Quiet’ has been sold to us as “a compact burst of energy”, and honestly, that’s pretty much a perfect definition for such a compelling and wholesome single. Penned by Pittsburgh-based musician and producer Cody Piper, the track sees him in pole position on both songwriting and production, crafting a nugget of electrifying prowess and lyrical relatability that’s hard to ignore. Built on slick indie-pop elements, the piece is both intense and gentle.
Moving at a relatively fast pace, ‘Be Quiet’ flourishes among a stream of uplifting drum grooves, quirky percussions and a stunning, heartwarming piano. There’s a certain amount of power-pop in it, the perfect match for Piper’s evocative, dynamic vocals. The way he’s able to build such potent harmonies is pretty impressive.
Lyrically, ‘Be Quiet’ sees the American troubadour delving into the experience of saying ‘I Love You’ for the first time. That trepidation, the polite euphoria… all declined on a sonic level. As Piper explains: “I turned it into a song about the feelings of nervousness and excitement when you tell someone that you love them for the very first time”.
Fans of Cody Piper can expect an LP release later this year.
